Golden Knights Struggle in Overtime Loss to Oilers in Game 2

LAS VEGAS — The Golden Knights fell to the Edmonton Oilers 5-4 in overtime during Game 2 of their playoff series on Thursday night, resulting in a 2-0 series deficit for Vegas at home.
Adin Hill, the Golden Knights’ goaltender and hero from their 2023 Stanley Cup victory, faced a tough challenge. Hill, who signed a $37.5 million extension this season, has struggled despite moments of brilliance, including a stunning pad save to deny Corey Perry.
“I liked our game today,” said Vegas captain Mark Stone. “We put up four goals, and usually when you score four goals, you’re going to win a playoff game.”
Vegas took an early lead but struggled as Edmonton scored three quick goals in the second period. The Oilers went ahead when defenseman Jake Walman’s shot deflected off a Vegas player’s skate into the net. Hill attempted to make the save but was hindered by the unexpected tip.
The next two goals were ones Hill needed to stop. A wrist shot from Vasily Podkolzin and a nearly identical shot from Darnell Nurse found the back of the net, giving Edmonton its first lead of the night. These crucial moments demonstrated that Hill, known for making big saves, needed to elevate his performance.
Coach Bruce Cassidy emphasized the importance of goaltending in close series. “He’s going to have to do that at some point. That’s just the makeup of any series, usually,” Cassidy said.
Calvin Pickard, the Oilers’ goaltender, has also faced scrutiny despite his six-game winning streak. He has allowed 19 goals but made key saves when needed, including a pivotal stop against Tomas Hertl in overtime.
The Golden Knights, typically dominant at even strength, struggled to match Edmonton’s pace. Vegas out-chanced the Oilers significantly throughout the game but couldn’t capitalize on key scoring opportunities.
“We had a lot of good looks. We could’ve easily won that game. We should’ve won that game,” said Stone.
Hill’s performance moving forward will be essential for the Golden Knights as they strive to overcome the 0-2 series deficit. If Hill can rediscover his earlier form, Vegas may still find a way to turn the series around.
