PITTSBURGH, PennsylvaniaNick Gonzales hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth inning to score Adam Frazier, giving the Pittsburgh Pirates a thrilling 5-4 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday night. The game was played after a one-hour, 23-minute rain delay interrupted the start.

Gonzales’ clutch hit marked the Pirates’ first win against the Phillies this season. Frazier, who had three hits, began the ninth with a single, followed by Jared Triolo’s bloop single. Isiah Kiner-Falefa‘s perfectly placed bunt loaded the bases.

Despite the pressure, Phillies reliever Jordan Romano (0-3) struck out Oneil Cruz. However, Gonzales then lifted a 2-2 slider to the warning track, allowing Frazier to score.

The Phillies gained an early advantage in the first inning when Trea Turner singled and later scored on a ground out by Nick Castellanos. Pittsburgh responded quickly, with Gonzales tripling and scoring on an RBI single by Bryan Reynolds, leveling the score at 1-1.

The game remained tied at 4-4 after four innings. Turner later drove in two more runs for Philadelphia in the fourth with a single off reliever Chase Shugart, scoring J.T. Realmuto and Edmundo Sosa.

Pirates starter Bailey Falter had a challenging outing, allowing four runs over 3 2/3 innings. He struck out two but also surrendered five hits and two walks.

Henry Davis hit a two-run homer for the Pirates in the bottom of the fourth, which helped close the gap. Davis entered the game in place of Endy Rodríguez, who left due to right elbow discomfort.

Reliever David Bednar (1-4) shone late, striking out the side in the ninth inning to secure a tie before Gonzales delivered the final blow.

The teams will face off again on Saturday, with Phillies’ left-handed pitcher Ranger Suárez set to take the mound against the Pirates’ lefty.
