C.J. Goodwin Signs New Contract with Dallas Cowboys for 2025 Season

FRISCO, Texas — The Dallas Cowboys have re-signed veteran defensive back C.J. Goodwin to a one-year contract for the 2025 NFL season. Goodwin, who has played with the Cowboys since 2018, will continue to contribute to the team’s special teams unit.
Goodwin’s new deal comes as the Cowboys navigate a sizable roster of 22 unrestricted free agents. Having established himself as one of the top special teams players in the league, Goodwin’s continuity with the franchise is seen as crucial, especially after the departure of former special teams coordinator John Fassel.
Despite facing injury setbacks that limited him in the 2023 season, Goodwin returned to form in 2024, participating in 88 games over his tenure with the Cowboys. His commitment to remain in Dallas was confirmed by his agreement to stay with new special teams coordinator Nick Sorensen, who took over the role following Fassel’s exit to join the Tennessee Titans.
“Just playing in this defense, it’s always fun to play in a defense that emphasizes the d-line,” Goodwin stated. His dedication speaks volumes about his desire to maintain stability during a time of transition within the coaching staff.
Last season, Goodwin recorded a career-high eight solo tackles and concluded his campaign with a total of nine tackles, displaying his resilience and dedication on the field. As the Cowboys seek to finalize contracts with other key players, including long-snapping free agent Trent Sieg, retaining Goodwin bolsters a reliable core on special teams.
The Cowboys are placing a priority on retaining homegrown talent as they prepare for the upcoming season. Head coach Mike McCarthy emphasized the significance of keeping key players in the fold. Goodwin’s re-signing aligns with the Cowboys’ strategy of building on their draft and development foundation.
Goodwin’s presence will likely ease the implementation of new special teams strategies as Sorensen begins to shape his vision for the unit. During his time in the NFL, Goodwin has also played for the Atlanta Falcons, Arizona Cardinals, New York Giants, San Francisco 49ers, and Cincinnati Bengals. His extensive experience makes him a seasoned option for the Cowboys.
As the Cowboys continue to make roster adjustments, the continuity brought by players like Goodwin will be invaluable. With the 2025 season approaching, Dallas is focused on maximizing both player retention and performance, hoping this will translate into deeper playoff runs.
