Governor Obaseki’s Presence at INEC Office Sparks Tensions Amid Election Allegations
The Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, made a conspicuous appearance at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) state collation office in Edo State. The purpose of his visit remains unclear, occurring amidst allegations of electoral malpractices made by the People's Democratic Party (PDP) against certain INEC officials.
The incident transpired around 3 a.m., contemporaneous with heightened activity both inside and outside the collation center, as preparations for the official results collation on Sunday morning were underway. This development follows claims from Matthew Iduoriyekemwe, the Director-General of the Asue/Ogie Campaign Council, who accused INEC of engaging in rigging activities.
Senator Ajibola Bashiru, the National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has stated that the party would take decisive action should Governor Obaseki remain at the INEC office. The governor eventually departed from the premises under substantial police escort around 5 a.m.
Up to this point, INEC has not issued any statement regarding the events or the allegations. The tension is heightening as residents of Edo State cast their votes to elect a new governor. The primary contenders include Asue Ighodalo from the PDP, Monday Okpebholo of the APC, and Olumide Akpata from the Labour Party.
