Horningsea Park Grass Fire

Fire crews have successfully gained control of a significant grass fire that threatened homes in Horningsea Park, located in Sydney’s south-west. The fire erupted shortly before 2 PM at a former amusement park site situated at the corner of Camden Valley Way and Cowpasture Road.

The response involved Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW), the Rural Fire Service (RFS), the Rail Fire and Emergency Service, alongside support from NSW Police, NSW Ambulance, and Transport for NSW. Due to safety considerations arising from the fire threat, FRNSW closed the local rail corridor, which has since been reopened.

Over 20 fire units, including Bushfire tankers, and 80 firefighters were deployed to combat the fire. Additionally, a FRNSW Mobile Command Centre provided further support. Two helicopters were utilized to conduct water bombing operations against the fire, rated a fierce 10th alarm, which was exacerbated by strong winds.

The fire spread over 12 hectares in an easterly direction, resulting in damage to two buildings, including an abandoned residence, as well as multiple outbuildings, caravans, and trailers. During the firefighting efforts, one firefighter suffered smoke inhalation, while another experienced an eye injury from smoke debris. Both were treated on-site, and another civilian received treatment for chest pains in their home.

Firefighters are currently engaged in mopping up operations, extinguishing a small number of spot fires at the location. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
