Green Bay Packers Part Ways with Defensive Coordinator Joe Barry
The Green Bay Packers have made the decision to part ways with their defensive coordinator, Joe Barry, after three seasons, according to an announcement by head coach Matt LaFleur.
Barry, who has worked in the NFL for 22 seasons, including stints as the defensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions (2007-08) and Washington (2015-2016), joined the Packers in 2021. LaFleur thanked Barry for his contributions and described him as one of the best men he has worked with in the league.
The Packers’ defense saw a decline in performance in recent years. They ranked ninth in total defense in 2021 but dropped to 17th in both 2022 and 2023. Notably, their run defense struggled, going from 11th in 2021 to 26th in 2022 and 28th in 2023.
Despite these challenges, the Packers managed to finish the regular season strong and recorded an impressive playoff win against the Dallas Cowboys, intercepting Dak Prescott twice, including a pick-six by Darnell Savage. However, their playoff run ended in a close defeat against the San Francisco 49ers.
With Barry’s departure, LaFleur will now begin the search for his third defensive coordinator since taking over as head coach in 2019.
