Greg Newsome II Emerges as Key Trade Target Ahead of NFL Deadline
As the NFL trade deadline approaches on November 5, Cleveland Browns cornerback Greg Newsome II has become a significant target for several teams looking to bolster their defenses. The 24-year-old, who was drafted in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft, has been a key member of the Browns’ secondary, starting 42 games and defending 14 passes with two interceptions last season.
The Green Bay Packers, in particular, are eyeing Newsome as a potential solution to their cornerback woes. According to ESPN insider Rob Demovsky, the Packers are more concerned about their cornerback position than their pass rush, and Newsome is a player they should “keep an eye on.” Demovsky noted that a change of scenery and joining Jeff Hafley‘s defense could help Newsome rediscover his best form, despite a less impressive current season.
The Washington Commanders are also interested in acquiring Newsome. With a strong 7-2 record and a solid lead in the NFC East, the Commanders are looking to enhance their defensive consistency, particularly at cornerback. Newsome’s addition could significantly strengthen their secondary and improve their playoff aspirations.
The Cleveland Browns, currently at a 2-7 record, are considering a rebuild and have discussed trading several players, including Newsome, edge rusher Za'Darius Smith, wide receiver Elijah Moore, and tight end David Njoku. Newsome’s contract, which includes a $13.38 million salary in 2025, is a notable commitment that any acquiring team would need to consider.
The trade deadline will reveal whether the Browns are willing to part with these players and if teams like the Packers or Commanders will make the necessary moves to secure them.
