Gregg Popovich Steps Down as Spurs Coach After Legendary 29-Year Tenure

San Antonio, TX — Gregg Popovich has stepped down as head coach of the San Antonio Spurs, ending a remarkable 29-year era that included five NBA championships. The announcement came on Friday, May 2, 2025, following a season in which Popovich missed most games due to recovery from a stroke.
“While my love and passion for the game remain, I’ve decided it’s time to step away as head coach,” Popovich, 76, said in a statement. He will transition to the role of president of basketball operations for the team.
This season saw Popovich miss all but five games after suffering a stroke on Nov. 2, 2024. His absence from the court marked the first significant interruption in a coaching career that spanned over three decades. Even so, he expressed gratitude for the support he received from players and staff.
“I’m forever grateful to the wonderful players, coaches, staff and fans who allowed me to serve them as the Spurs head coach,” Popovich said.
Popovich retires with a career record of 1,422-869, making him the winningest coach in NBA history. He also holds the record for the most playoff wins with 170, ranking only behind coaches Phil Jackson and Pat Riley.
In his time leading the Spurs, Popovich became known for his unique leadership style and emphasis on accountability and team first thinking. He was a three-time NBA Coach of the Year and guided the Spurs to 22 consecutive playoff appearances from 1998 to 2019.
“His impact on our family, San Antonio, the Spurs and the game of basketball is profound,” said Spurs Managing Partner Peter J. Holt. “He is truly one-of-one as a person, leader and coach.”
Popovich’s coaching legacy includes mentoring many successful coaches in the NBA today, including Steve Kerr and Ime Udoka, who credit him for shaping their own coaching philosophies.
As Popovich looks to the next chapter in his career, players and coaches alike reflect on his influence and contributions to the game. “Pop is a generational leader,” said Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra. “Everyone knows the amazing job he’s done and all the accomplishments.”
Popovich plans to remain active in the Spurs organization, continuing to influence the team and the NBA community.
