Gregg Popovich Steps Down as Spurs Coach, Mitch Johnson Takes Over

SAN ANTONIO – Gregg Popovich, the legendary coach of the San Antonio Spurs, announced Friday that he will step down from his head coaching role and transition to a full-time position as the team’s president of basketball operations. Popovich, who has been with the Spurs since 1988, made the decision following his recovery from a mild stroke he suffered last November.
In a statement, Popovich, 76, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to coach the Spurs. “While my love and passion for the game remain, I’ve decided it’s time to step away as head coach,” he said. “I am forever grateful to the wonderful players, coaches, staff and fans who allowed me to serve them as the Spurs’ head coach.”
Mitch Johnson, who served as the interim head coach during Popovich’s recovery, will take over the coaching duties permanently. Johnson finished the season with a 32-45 record after stepping in for Popovich.
Johnson, who was named acting head coach last season, has been with the Spurs for nearly a decade. He started as an assistant coach for the Austin Spurs before moving to the NBA club’s main roster. He expressed excitement about his new role. “I am truly grateful and honored to receive this incredible opportunity,” Johnson said. “I promise to give this responsibility everything I have to make Spurs fans proud.”
Popovich’s impact on the Spurs is monumental. He holds the record as the winningest coach in NBA history, with 1,422 career wins and five NBA championships. He guided the team through 22 consecutive playoff seasons from 1998 to 2019, establishing a winning culture that Johnson aims to continue.
As the Spurs begin a new chapter, stakeholders believe Johnson embodies the values and poise necessary to uphold the franchise’s legacy. Spurs governor Peter Holt endorsed Johnson’s leadership, emphasizing the continuity and growth within the organization.
Popovich, who also coached the U.S. men’s national basketball team to gold medals at the 2019 FIBA World Cup and the Tokyo Olympics, has influenced countless players and coaches throughout his career. His departure marks the end of an era in the NBA.
This transition reflects a pivotal moment for the San Antonio Spurs as they look towards the future with Mitch Johnson at the helm.
