Griekspoor Upsets Zverev at BNP Paribas Open: Second Round Highlights

INDIAN WELLS, Calif. — Tallon Griekspoor made headlines at the BNP Paribas Open on Saturday by defeating top-seeded Alexander Zverev, marking a significant milestone in his career. The match concluded the second round of the prestigious tournament, held from March 2-16, 2025.
Griekspoor, who had long struggled against top 5 players, finally secured his first victory in 19 encounters against this elite group. After a tense match that saw him miss five match points while serving at 6-5 in the third set, he pulled through in the tiebreak, converting on his sixth match point for a final score of 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (6). This victory propelled him into the third round where he will face Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard.
Zverev, ranked as the top seed, became the first player in the men’s draw at Indian Wells to lose in the first match since Andy Murray in 2017. Looking back on his performance, Zverev cited issues with his serve, stating, ‘I think I’m serving quite badly the last few weeks. My second serve is fine, but my first serve is terrible.’
Another highlight of the tournament was the performance of unseeded American Madison Keys, returning to the courts after winning the Australian Open back in January. She faced a tough match against last year’s quarterfinalist, defeating her decisively 6-3, 6-0, and demonstrating her power with 28 winners compared to only 10 unforced errors.
Griekspoor’s victory is emblematic of the unpredictable nature of tournament play. He faced strong competition throughout the match, including a breathtaking rally in the second set against Zverev that saw Griekspoor maintain composure while his opponent faltered under pressure.
The match was a showcase of athletic prowess, as Griekspoor exhibited exceptional court coverage and strategic play. When asked about his performance, he expressed relief rather than joy, noting, ‘I felt like it was a matter of time for that win to come.’
This tournament continues to demonstrate high-level tennis as players battle for a coveted title. As Griekspoor prepares for the next round, he emphasizes the experience gained from his journey. ‘I believe in the fact that for everybody it happens when it happens,’ he explained.
Griekspoor’s determination is a testament to his dedication, as he aims to make further strides in his career. His progress will be closely watched as he faces Yosuke Watanuki in the next match.
