Tuomas Iisalo Memphis Grizzlies Coach

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — The Memphis Grizzlies have named Tuomas Iisalo as the team’s new head coach, the organization announced on Friday. This follows Iisalo’s performance as interim head coach during the last days of the regular season.

General Manager Zach Kleiman expressed confidence in Iisalo’s ability to lead, stating, “Tuomas’ teams have consistently exceeded expectations, and we look forward to the same in Memphis.” Iisalo took over coaching duties on March 28 after the team experienced a dismal 0-5 road trip, which resulted in the firing of Taylor Jenkins, the franchise’s winningest coach.

In his interim role, Iisalo led the Grizzlies to a record of 4-5 in the final nine games. Under his guidance, Memphis earned the eighth seed in the playoffs by splitting two games in the play-in tournament. However, the Grizzlies were subsequently swept in the first round by Oklahoma City.

Iisalo has an impressive coaching background, having previously coached Paris Basketball to a EuroCup championship and earning EuroCup Coach of the Year honors in 2024. He also has experience with teams in Germany, including five seasons with the Crailsheim Merlins.

A native of Finland, Iisalo’s appointment makes him the first Finnish-born head coach in NBA history. He brings a solid playing history, having spent 14 years in professional basketball in Finland before transitioning into coaching.
