Memphis Grizzlies Zach Edey Basketball Action

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — With the 2023-2024 NBA season winding down, the Memphis Grizzlies are counting on rookie center Zach Edey to step up as they approach the playoffs. After struggling with injuries and trades that depleted their center position, the Grizzlies selected Edey with the ninth overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, a move aimed at bolstering their frontline.

Edey, who made headlines during his tenure at Purdue, faced a challenging start to his NBA career. In his first four games, he committed more fouls than successful field goal attempts, raising concerns about his readiness for professional play. However, the 7-foot-4-inch rookie quickly found his footing, averaging 7.8 rebounds per game and putting him in contention for the Rookie of the Year award.

“Zach has shown incredible growth over the season,” said Grizzlies Coach Taylor Jenkins. “His ability to rebound and block shots has been crucial for us, especially as we move closer to the playoffs.”

As the regular season draws to a close, Edey boasts an average of 9.2 points per game while shooting an impressive 60.6% on two-pointers. His defense has also improved, with 1.3 blocks per game, demonstrating his ability to protect the rim against opposing offenses.

Edey’s foul rate has decreased significantly; he now averages just 2.6 fouls per game, a vital statistic given the increased physicality expected in playoff matchups. However, concerns remain about how he will handle pick-and-roll situations, where teams will likely target him to draw fouls or create scoring opportunities.

“We have to strategize on how to use Zach effectively in different scenarios,” Jenkins added. “He’s the only true center we have, so his contributions will be pivotal.”

Despite Coach Jenkins keeping Edey’s minutes at a conservative 20.9 per game, his presence on the court could be both an asset and a liability during the playoffs. The Grizzlies’ drop coverage defense may be tested when matched against teams that can exploit Edey’s potential mismatch against quicker guards.

Grizzlies General Manager Zach Kleiman expressed confidence in Edey’s abilities to adapt. “We believe teams will have to adjust to our style with Zach on the floor,” he said. “His strength lies in offensive rebounding and rim defense, which are key components for a successful playoff run.”

As the postseason nears, the Grizzlies are hopeful that Edey can embrace the moment and deliver when it matters the most. With increased intensity and expectations, all eyes will be on Edey to prove he can handle the pressure of high-stakes basketball.
