CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Cleveland Guardians are facing a major lineup adjustment following the off-season trade of Josh Naylor to the Arizona Diamondbacks. The absence of Naylor, who contributed significantly with 31 home runs and 108 RBIs last season, has sparked discussions about how the team plans to rebound in the upcoming 2024 season.

In a recent episode of the Terry’s Talkin’ podcast, cleveland.com columnist Terry Pluto explored the Guardians’ strategy to replace Naylor’s output. Pluto noted that while Naylor struggled towards the end of the previous season, his overall performance remains noteworthy. “You’re not only trying to replace Naylor, but it’s still 30 and 100,” Pluto stated, reflecting on Naylor’s impact.

Chris Antonetti, the team’s president of baseball operations, has expressed confidence in the potential for internal improvement. Pluto added, “Not all of them will, but they think some will,” referring to players projected to elevate their games this season.

Among the names mentioned are Lane Thomas, Carlos Santana, and particularly Bo Naylor, a young catcher expected to emerge. Pluto highlighted Bo Naylor’s promising minor league stats, where he amassed 28 home runs and 95 RBIs in the last two seasons: “He could be a guy that has 20 homers, but that would be great to put that in the lineup,” he said.

Another player drawing attention is Steven Kwan. As he enters the final year of his contract, Kwan has reportedly improved his physical strength, potentially increasing his offensive output. “Showing he’s capable of more extra-base hits could help him when it comes to his next contract,” Campbell noted during the podcast.

As spring training wraps up, the Guardians prepare for their season opener on Thursday against the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium. The Guardians recently clinched a 3-2 victory over the Diamondbacks in their final exhibition game, signaling readiness as they head into the regular season.

In an uplifting sign for Cleveland fans, Jhonkensy Noel has emerged as a standout in spring training, boasting a .444 batting average with five RBIs in eight games. The Dominican slugger leads the team with 19 hits and also managed to strike out 19 times without drawing a single walk.

Moreover, Lane Thomas had a strong month with three home runs and 11 RBIs since March 2, highlighting the depth of talent within the lineup. Kyle Manzardo, another young player, is also showing promise with a .308 average this spring.

With the season approaching, the Guardians are focused not only on finding replacements for Naylor but also enhancing the overall strength of their lineup. Manager Stephen Vogt is optimistic, citing internal growth among players as the key to adapting to the new circumstances. “We’re going to have to do it in a different way,” he said, acknowledging the absence of established power hitters like Naylor.

Cleveland will rely on its young talent and potential offensive surprises this season. The collective efforts of players stepping up will be crucial as the Guardians aim to maintain competitiveness in the league.
