Guardians Start Season Amid Injuries and Roster Changes

CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Cleveland Guardians are set to begin their season on Thursday against the Kansas City Royals, but not without challenges. Just before their season opener, the team announced that five pitchers have been placed on the 15-day injured list.
The injured players include right-handers Shane Bieber and Trevor Stephan, both recovering from elbow surgery, along with Slade Cecconi, who is dealing with a left oblique strain. Lefties John Means and Erik Sabrowski round out the injury list, both undergoing rehabilitation for their respective elbow surgeries.
Shane Bieber underwent ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction in April 2022 and has progressed to the bullpen phase of his throwing program. He is expected to begin live batting practice in four to six weeks, according to the club. “I’m feeling good and on track,” Bieber stated. “It’s just about staying patient and working my way back.”
Trevor Stephan, who had the same surgery as Bieber and a bone spur removed, is also in the bullpen phase and projected to start live batting practice in four to six weeks. The Guardians have drawn hope from both pitchers showing encouraging progress in their recoveries.
Franco Aleman, who underwent a hernia repair, is another bright spot as he begins throwing bullpens, aiming to engage in game activities by the same timeline. Cecconi, who was acquired in a trade for Josh Naylor, is recovering from a strain incurred during training camp and may return to full activities soon.
Sabrowski received an injection in his left elbow to treat inflammation. Although he has faced setbacks in the past with two Tommy John surgeries, he is back in a throwing program and expected to begin mound work in a few weeks.
Meanwhile, designated hitter David Fry is recovering after Tommy John surgery in November and has commenced hitting activities, with hopes of returning to game conditions in 4-6 weeks.
The Guardians are also awaiting the return of their second-round pick, Daniel Espino, who underwent anterior capsule surgery. Espino is in the bullpen phase and on track for live pitching sessions in six to eight weeks.
As the roster reshapes, the Guardians are looking to compensate for not just the injuries but significant turnover on the team. Manager Stephen Vogt acknowledged, “Losing players like Naylor is tough, but we’re ready to adapt.”
Ahead of the first pitch on Thursday, Tanner Bibee expressed enthusiasm about being the opening day starter. “It’s a chance to set the tone for the season,” Bibee said. “My goal is to establish our identity early.” Bibee noted the importance of leadership in the clubhouse, especially with injured players absent.
Despite the challenges, the Guardians are focused on starting the season strong. “We’ve trained hard and are prepared for whatever comes our way,” Bibee added. “We’re ready to compete.”
Kansas City’s Kauffman Stadium will host the season opener at 4:05 p.m. EDT, featuring Bibee on the mound against Royals’ Cole Ragans. The game marks the beginning of a new chapter for the Guardians as they navigate their way through personnel changes and injuries.
