Pep Guardiola Press Conference Champions League

Madrid, SpainManchester City manager Pep Guardiola addressed the media on Tuesday ahead of the team’s crucial match against Real Madrid in the Round of 16 of the Champions League. The press conference, held at the Santiago Bernabéu, provided insights into City’s prospects of overcoming a 3-2 deficit from the first leg.

Guardiola candidly discussed the performance of Julián Álvarez, who has been excelling at Atlético de Madrid after his departure from City. When asked if he regretted not doing more to keep the Argentine forward, Guardiola noted that Álvarez was determined to seek more playing time. “I don’t feel responsible for Álvarez’s departure,” said Guardiola. “He wanted to play every minute and probably did not have that last season.”

Guardiola expressed gratitude for Álvarez’s contributions during his time with the club, which included part of the team that won a historic treble in the 2022-23 season. “We are very happy for him,” he added, highlighting the importance of his roles in games that helped secure major titles.

The manager also touched on the unexpected challenges City is facing this season due to numerous player injuries. “It’s unfortunate that someone as good as Julián is thriving elsewhere while we struggle,” he said, emphasizing that the team would have used him significantly more this season.”

As City prepares for what could be one of their most pivotal matches of the season, Guardiola recognized the pressure associated with the impending match. “We’re facing elimination. If we go out, it’ll be earlier than ever in the competition that I’ve won three times,” he stated, referencing his previous successes with Barcelona and City.

Despite the odds stacked against his team, Guardiola showcased a more optimistic outlook, contradicting earlier remarks where he had stated that the team had a “one percent chance” after the first match. “I might have lied a bit,” he said with a smile, willing to adopt a more hopeful perspective as the rematch approaches. “We need to play the perfect game. We have to have courage and be ourselves.”

Guardiola acknowledged that the current situation may impact the future for some players, especially amid an ongoing team rejuvenation with new signings like Marmoush, Khusanov, Reis, and Nico González. The absence of key players has been evident this season, specifically Rodri, who suffered a significant knee injury. “He was named the world’s best player, and you can’t deny his importance to the team,” he remarked.

Historically, the match between Manchester City and Real Madrid has become a significant rivalry in modern football, with the teams meeting in European competition five times in six years. The last three encounters have seen the victor go on to lift the Champions League trophy.

As Guardiola reflects on the season’s difficulties, he remains aware of the team’s legacy. “We’ve had a fantastic run, but we also recognize this year has been challenging. We have this opportunity, and we’re ready to take it,” he concluded.
