Gunner Holliday Hits Grand Slam in Comeback with Orioles
BALTIMORE — Gunner Holliday had a rough debut in the MLB earlier this year, but he is determined to make the most of his second chance with the Baltimore Orioles. After struggling in his first stint, he expressed hopes that this time will be different, saying he wants to enjoy the game and be ‘present.’
On Wednesday, Holliday made a big statement by hitting a grand slam during the Orioles’ game against the Toronto Blue Jays. The impressive 439-foot shot came in the fifth inning off Blue Jays reliever Yerry Rodriguez, marking Holliday’s first home run in the big leagues.
The grand slam not only cleared the flag court but also landed on Eutaw Street, where it will get a brick to commemorate the achievement. Holliday became the youngest player in Orioles history to hit a grand slam and just the third to hit his first homer with the bases loaded.
After starting his career with a tough 2-for-34 showing and earning a trip back to Triple-A Norfolk, Holliday worked hard to improve. He recalled that the additional plate appearances in the minors were valuable, especially in what he referred to as ‘the world’s toughest league.’
As he celebrated with his teammates Ryan Mountcastle, Cedric Mullins, and Jordan Westburg at home plate, the Camden Yards crowd of over 25,000 erupted in cheers, giving him a well-deserved curtain call.
