Los Angeles Lakers Rui Hachimura Basketball Game Action

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Entering the 2024-25 NBA season, speculation swirled around the Los Angeles Lakers regarding potential trades to enhance their roster. Among the players frequently mentioned were Rui Hachimura and Austin Reaves, both viewed as pivotal to the team’s future.

However, as the season progresses, Hachimura has begun to reshape this narrative with his on-court performance. Over his last 10 games, he has averaged 18.2 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 2.5 three-point field goals made, shooting an impressive .556 from the field, .431 from beyond the arc, and .760 from the free-throw line.

Six of those games saw him score at least 20 points, while he scored no less than 17 in a total of eight games. Such consistency has prompted discussions about whether trading Hachimura is still a reasonable option for the Lakers moving into the summer.

The 27-year-old forward, previously seen as an enigmatic player, is now showcasing a potential that teams around the league may find attractive. “Rui’s ability on both ends of the floor can make him appealing for several franchises looking to upgrade their rosters,” noted an NBA executive. “He has the skills that fit well in today’s game.”

Adding to the intrigue is Hachimura’s expiring contract, valued at $18,259,259 for the 2025-26 season. This contract could offer the Lakers flexibility should they pursue an impactful player this summer. With Hachimura, along with teammates Maxi Kleber and Gabe Vincent, preparing to combine for a total of $43,529,259 in expiring contracts, Los Angeles could potentially leverage these figures to facilitate a trade for an All-Star.

However, the Lakers face a dilemma: Hachimura’s on-court contributions may outweigh any benefits gained from trading him. Energizing a squad that previously struggled on defense, Hachimura has played with increased intensity, focusing on aspects such as spacing, attacking closeouts, and offensive rebounding.

This hustle has set a tone for a talent-rich team still in search of cohesive play. With Hachimura alongside Dorian Finney-Smith and Jarred Vanderbilt, the Lakers have a trio of forwards able to deliver solid contributions, critical for maintaining performance as they rely on playmakers like Luka Doncic, LeBron James, and Austin Reaves.

As the season unfolds, Hachimura is steadily growing into a role crucial to the Lakers’ success. Should he maintain his current pace, securing a long-term future in Los Angeles seems increasingly likely.
