Halliburton Launches Innovative EarthStar 3DX Drilling Technology

Houston, Texas – Halliburton announced the launch of its EarthStar® 3DX on Monday, May 19, 2025. This new 3D horizontal look-ahead resistivity service offers operators geological insights into horizontal wells up to 50 feet before the drill bit penetrates.
The EarthStar 3DX service allows operators to gather real-time data, enabling them to identify potential hazards and make informed decisions during drilling operations. Jim Collins, Halliburton’s vice president of Sperry Drilling, emphasized the importance of this service. “EarthStar 3DX service is the latest example of Halliburton’s leadership in reservoir mapping technology,” he stated. “By mapping geological variations before they are encountered, operators can adjust well trajectories to minimize risk and increase reservoir contact.”
This service features an ultra-deep resistivity sensor placed just three meters from the drill bit. Unlike conventional mapping technologies, EarthStar 3DX helps operators anticipate changes in formations, optimize contact with reservoirs, and enhance hydrocarbon recovery. This proactive approach aims to reduce unnecessary corrections during drilling, thereby improving operational safety.
The service not only mitigates wellbore instability challenges but also allows operators to react early to geological changes surrounding the wellbore. By doing so, it enhances the success of drilling operations in high-angle and horizontal wells, reducing the risk of unexpected geological or fluid changes.
The technology integrates advanced electromagnetic sensors that provide detailed resistivity readings. This data supports comprehensive petrophysical analysis, crucial for evaluating reserves. “Our goal is to customize drilling solutions that maximize asset value for our customers,” Collins added.
In addition to EarthStar 3DX, Halliburton and its partner Rhino Resources have also recently delivered two exploration wells in Block 2914 offshore Namibia. This signifies Halliburton’s commitment to enhancing drilling technology and improving operational efficiency across the industry.
