Harrison Smith Signs for 14th NFL Season with Vikings

EAGAN, Minn. — Minnesota Vikings safety Harrison Smith will return for his 14th NFL season after signing a restructured contract, multiple reports confirmed Tuesday.
The 36-year-old player, known as one of the league’s premier safeties, agreed to a one-year deal worth $10.25 million with additional incentives that could raise the total to $14 million, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
Smith, who was selected in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft, has spent his entire career with the Vikings. He is a six-time Pro Bowl selection and boasts an impressive record of 37 career interceptions, with four of these returned for touchdowns.
The veteran safety’s decision to return comes after a tumultuous end to the Vikings’ previous season, where emotions ran high during a locker room speech following a 27-9 playoff loss to the Los Angeles Rams. There had been speculation regarding his potential retirement, especially with teammate Cam Bynum leaving the team in free agency.
“I’m ready to attack this season,” Smith said in a statement. “I’ve still got plenty left to give to this team and I’m excited for what’s ahead.”
In the 2024 season, Smith made 16 starts, recording three interceptions, 87 tackles, one sack, and one fumble recovery. He was recognized for his continued contributions to the Vikings’ defense, earning a 66.2 overall grade from Pro Football Focus, ranking him among the top safeties in the league.
Throughout his 13 seasons with the Vikings, Smith has compiled significant defensive stats, including 1,127 total tackles, 97 passes defended, 20.5 sacks, 12 forced fumbles, and eight fumble recoveries. His leadership and experience will be crucial as the Vikings look to build on their successful 14-3 season amid a reshaped roster.
“Having Harrison back is huge for our defense,” said head coach Kevin O'Connell. “His experience and playmaking ability can’t be overstated. He knows how to win, and he brings a level of focus that is contagious.”
