ATLANTA, Ga. — In a major move at last week’s NBA trade deadline, the Atlanta Hawks acquired guard Caris LeVert, forward Georges Niang, and Terance Mann from the Cleveland Cavaliers and Los Angeles Clippers respectively. The trades involved sending Bogdan Bogdanovic, De’Andre Hunter, Cody Zeller, and David Roddy to their former teams, shaking up the Hawks’ roster as they seek improvement as the season progresses.
While LeVert, Mann, and Niang participated in the Hawks’ recent games against the Milwaukee Bucks, Washington Wizards, and Orlando Magic, the team left a significant gap after parting ways with Hunter and Bogdanovic, both key contributors to the Hawks in previous seasons. General Manager Landry Fields emphasized the importance of veteran players and their experience in the league, stating, “These acquisitions bring proven skills that we believe will strengthen our roster.”
LeVert comes to Atlanta with years of NBA experience. Standing 6’6”, he brings valuable offensive creation and perimeter defense, but has struggled with rim finishing. LeVert has averaged 3.7 assists per game this season with the Cavaliers and shows potential to step up as a secondary ball handler alongside Trae Young, a much-needed position for the Hawks. “I’m excited to get back on the floor, make an impact, and help the team win,” LeVert said. His efficiency is highlighted by his three-point shooting, where he has converted shoots at a 38.5% rate over the past three seasons.
Georges Niang, known for his sharpshooting, adds significant value on the offensive end. He has maintained an over 40% shooting rate from three-point range over the past several seasons. During his career, Niang’s ability to create space through spot-up shooting has made him a key asset for the teams he’s played on. However, concerns linger regarding his defensive capabilities, which could push the Hawks to compensate for his limitations on that end.
Terance Mann, the versatile player acquired from the Clippers, has displayed a knack for finishing at the rim and defending opposing guards. While Mann’s offensive creation isn’t his strongest suit, his passing efficiency and decision-making on the court are strengths that the Hawks may utilize as they develop their offensive strategies. Mann said, “Joining the Hawks presents a fresh opportunity for growth. I can’t wait to contribute.”
Fields and head coach Quin Snyder are clearly hopeful about integrating these new players to improve team chemistry and performance. Early results show promise, with Niang scoring 16 points and grabbing six rebounds during his first game with the Hawks against the Wizards, displaying his immediate positive impact. LeVert rebounded from a limited appearance in his debut, scoring 18 points against Orlando, further proving his worth to the team.
Despite enthusiasm surrounding the new additions, the Hawks still face challenges this season. Currently sitting in the eighth position in the Eastern Conference, they are just 1.5 games from potential playoff positioning. The Hawks will have to integrate their new players quickly to boost performance as they vie for playoff contention.
“It remains to be seen how these trades will pan out, but there is optimism within the organization,” commented a league source familiar with the situation.
As the season unfolds, all eyes will be on how the trio of new players performs and how they adapt to their new roles under Snyder. The Hawks are determined to turn their fortunes around as they pursue a spot in the playoffs.
