Hawks Eye Westbrook to Bolster Roster Ahead of Next NBA Season

ATLANTA, Ga. – The Atlanta Hawks are looking to escape the Play-In Tournament and make a serious playoff push this upcoming season after a disappointing performance last year that saw them miss the playoffs entirely. Central to their strategy may be the acquisition of former MVP Russell Westbrook, who could enter free agency this offseason if he declines his player option with the Denver Nuggets.
Westbrook’s potential departure from Denver seems plausible as whispers of trade rumors surrounding Atlanta’s star guard, Trae Young, continue to circulate. While Young hasn’t made any formal trade requests, there is a concern that the Hawks need to make bold moves to ensure he remains committed to the organization.
Zach Buckley, a writer for Bleacher Report, theorizes that Westbrook’s move to Atlanta could serve both the player and the franchise well. “Westbrook has shown he can still be productive, averaging 13.3 points and 6.1 assists in 27.9 minutes this season,” Buckley noted, emphasizing the guard’s capability to improve the Hawks’ dynamic.
Playing in the league since 2008, Westbrook was part of the Oklahoma City Thunder team that reached the NBA Finals in 2012. While he may not revert back to his triple-double days at 36, his experience could prove invaluable. “He could help the Hawks push the pace and set up his teammates for quality looks, regardless of whether Young is on the court,” Buckley added.
The upcoming offseason will be pivotal for both Westbrook and the Hawks as they look to redefine their rosters. Should Westbrook choose free agency, his signing could reshape Atlanta’s future. Buckley suggests that beyond just talent acquisition, it could be a strategic move to preclude Young from seeking a trade.
“This is an opportunity for Atlanta to reinvigorate their playoff aspirations,” Buckley concluded, hinting at the potential impact of securing Westbrook.
