Heat Hold Tight Lead over Hawks in Crucial Play-In Matchup

ATLANTA, GA — The Miami Heat lead the Atlanta Hawks 62-53 at halftime in the NBA Play-In Tournament on April 18, 2025. The winner of this matchup will secure a spot in the NBA Playoffs.
Miami’s dominant first half included standout performances, particularly from Bam Adebayo, who recorded three blocks and played strong defense against Trae Young. Caris LeVert capped off the half with a critical three-pointer, pushing the Heat’s lead to nine points heading into the break.
In the opening quarter, Miami took charge early, shooting 53.5% from the field while limiting the Hawks to just 36%. By the end of the first quarter, Miami led 33-24, thanks to Adebayo’s 10 points on 5-of-8 shooting.
“Bam is a luxury for us,” said Miami head coach Erik Spoelstra. “His ability to protect the rim and initiate our transition defense sets the tone for the whole team.”
The Hawks struggled with their shooting, having made only five of their 18 three-point attempts in the first half. Young, who was ejected in an earlier game against the Orlando Magic, faced tough defensive pressure throughout the half.
Despite trailing, the Hawks had their moments. Onyeka Okongwu made a significant three-pointer late in the second quarter, and Atlanta’s defensive adjustments helped them contain Miami’s offensive burst. However, Atlanta’s inability to consistently hit shots has proven to be a critical factor in the game.
“We need to find a rhythm from beyond the arc,” said Hawks guard Trae Young, who has yet to capitalize on Miami’s defensive lapses. “We can’t let this become a habit.”
As the game continues, the question remains whether the Hawks can adjust and find their shooting touch as the playoff stakes grow higher. Will Miami maintain their lead and secure a playoff berth, or can Atlanta turn the tide in the second half?
