Miami Heat Playoffs Preparation

CLEVELAND — The Miami Heat are gearing up for a demanding first-round playoff series against the top-seeded Cleveland Cavaliers, opening Sunday night at Rocket Arena. The Heat, who recently overcame the Chicago Bulls and Atlanta Hawks in the play-in round, face a formidable challenge against a team that finished the regular season with a 64-18 record.

Despite adversity, second-year forward Jaime Jaquez Jr. is confident in his ability to contribute more significantly this season. After a recent win over the Washington Wizards, Jaquez expressed his dedication to improving his shooting during practice sessions with Heat shooting coach Rob Fodor. His field-goal percentage has dipped to .461 from .489, and his three-point percentage has also seen a decline, dropping from .322 to .311.

“We get up a lot of shots,” Jaquez said about his work with Fodor. “It’s about refining my technique and finding consistency.” He emphasized that while he is not changing his shot, he is focusing on minor adjustments to enhance his performance.

Heat coach Erik Spoelstra acknowledged the need for Jaquez to adapt and evolve as he navigates increased defensive attention from opposing teams. “It’s fine-tuning his fundamentals and footwork now that he’s on the scouting report,” Spoelstra said. “It’s about playing with intention.”

Meanwhile, Jaquez’s contributions may be critical as the Heat transition to facing the Cavaliers, who have been one of the most consistent teams throughout the season. Cleveland ranks first in the league for offensive rating and boasts three All-Stars: Donovan Mitchell, Darius Garland, and Evan Mobley.

“Cleveland has played at a high level all season,” Spoelstra said. “They’re well-coached and have great players, so we need to respect what they’ve accomplished.”

The Heat’s path to this point has not been easy. Despite finishing the regular season with a 37-45 record, they believe in their capability to perform against a top-tier team like Cleveland. Center Bam Adebayo noted the importance of securing a win in Cleveland before strategizing for the rest of the series. “They’ve had a historical season,” he acknowledged, “but we’re not just here to go out softly.”

The Heat played the Cavaliers three times during the regular season, narrowly losing two games, including a dramatic matchup where a late shot by Duncan Robinson was ruled out due to stepping out of bounds. Tyler Herro led the Heat in average points per game against Cleveland, with Adebayo emphasizing that they need to treat every game as crucial.

As the playoffs begin, the Heat have solidified their place in NBA history, with an all-time postseason record of 163-132 (.553), ranking them third-best in terms of winning percentage. This playoff appearance marks their sixth consecutive, tying the longest streak in franchise history.

Game 1 of the best-of-seven series is set for Sunday at 7 p.m., with additional games scheduled later in the week. Tickets for the home games are already on sale, and fans are encouraged to act quickly due to limited inventory.
