Heavy rains made quite the scene in Delhi on Wednesday, drenching the city and causing major disruptions. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) had to step in and advised everyone to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary due to the severe weather.

As the rain continued into Thursday, areas across North Delhi, Central-Delhi, South Delhi, and East Delhi experienced flooding and waterlogging. The IMD also issued alerts stating that moderate thunderstorms and lightning could hit these areas soon.

Tragically, during this extreme weather, a 22-year-old woman named Tanuja and her 3-year-old son Priyansh drowned after falling into a waterlogged drain in the Ghazipur area. This incident has understandably shaken the local community.

Traveling became quite the hassle as well; IndiGo airlines warned of delayed flights due to the weather conditions. Between 7:30 PM and 8:00 PM on Wednesday, around ten flights were diverted from Delhi airport due to the downpour.

Residents in various parts of the city woke up to clear skies on Thursday morning, but many faced waterlogged streets that glimmered from the previous day’s rainfall. Sites like ITO and AIIMS saw heavy traffic as the conditions worsened.

Further complicating matters, local schools were ordered to shut down for safety reasons. This news came from the Directorate of Education as they responded to the heavy rainfall and forecasts predicting more rain to come.

Pumping operations were also set in motion to alleviate the mounting waterlogged areas, especially near the Institute of Town Planners India, where water intruded into their building.

Reports indicated that the Salwan School Station in Mayur Vihar registered heavy rainfall, with over 119 mm of rain causing problems across the region. The NCMRWF in Gautam Buddha Nagar wasn’t spared either, totaling 118.5 mm during the same time frame.

Local authorities are urging people to avoid driving unless necessary, as the roads have transformed into rivers in some spots. Traffic has been difficult to navigate, with long queues forming on major thoroughfares like the Delhi-Noida Expressway.

All in all, this weather has caught everyone off guard, leaving many homes and roads affected amid serious safety concerns.
