High School Football Player Transfer Sparks Excitement in Hawaii
In an unexpected development in high school football, junior quarterback Matai Fuiava has transferred from St. John Bosco High School in California, one of the nation’s top-ranked teams, to Kahuku High School in Hawaii. The transfer has set the stage for Fuiava to potentially play against Campbell High School, Hawaii’s top team, this coming Saturday.
Matai Fuiava, who had previously garnered attention for his impressive performance at St. John Bosco, marked his varsity debut with a standout performance boasting over 300 passing yards and three touchdowns in a victory over Chaminade-Madonna of Florida. His father, Robert Fuiava, expressed mixed emotions about the move, emphasizing the fast-paced nature of the family’s decision to relocate. “We wish he could have played against Mater Dei,” Robert Fuiava mentioned, referring to the renowned rivalry game they will miss.
The Fuiava family relocated to Hawaii amidst Fuiava’s junior year when a sudden opportunity presented itself. “I talked to him about it Friday,” said Robert Fuiava. “Saturday morning he woke up, he’s like ‘Dad, something is just calling me to the islands.'”
The family has fond memories of the North Shore’s strong football culture, an impression first formed during a game where St. John Bosco was met with generous hospitality from the Kahuku community. Matai Fuiava’s older brother, LoPaki Fuiava, recalled this experience fondly.
Despite the buzz, it’s yet to be seen how soon Matai Fuiava will take the field for Kahuku. His presence undoubtedly adds a new layer of competition within the team. “A lot of people think that he just went there and won the position, and it’s his,” LoPaki Fuiava remarked. “That’s not true; he still needs to perform this week during practice. We don’t do handouts.”
Meanwhile, Fuiava’s move leaves freshman Koa Malau’ulu as the likely starter for St. John Bosco in the upcoming matchup against Servite High School. Malau’ulu made his starting debut earlier this month in a successful game against Orange Lutheran.
The transfer also has broader implications within the highly competitive Trinity League. St. John Bosco, currently ranked second nationally, will face top-ranked Mater Dei next week, adding pressure on the team’s offensive lineup.
For Kahuku, the integration of Matai Fuiava offers a potential boost as they prepare for pivotal games, with Fuiava already working to synchronize with teammates like Mana Carvalho. “These young men just for myself personally, just being around them is motivating,” remarked LoPaki Fuiava about the Kahuku team.
The Fuiava family’s move was initially planned for a few years down the line, but the immediate relocation has brought an unexpected opportunity for both Matai Fuiava and the Kahuku football community.
