Historic Agreement Reached for Broadcast of T20 World Cup Final and Springbok Test Matches
SuperSport and the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) have struck a historic agreement that will see the live broadcast of the much-anticipated T20 World Cup final and two Springbok Test matches.
The T20 World Cup final between the Proteas and India is scheduled to take place today at 16:30 at the iconic Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados. This agreement brings an end to the blackout previously experienced, allowing more South Africans to witness the Proteas potentially making World Cup history.
Witnessing a seven-match winning streak, the Proteas are set to face India in the battle for the coveted T20 World Cup title. This could mark a significant milestone for South African cricket, as they have not been in a title-winning position since the inaugural Champions Trophy in Bangladesh in 1998.
On Thursday, the South African men’s cricket team secured their spot in the final after a stunning nine-wicket victory over Afghanistan in the semi-final at the Brian Lara Cricket Stadium in Trinidad and Tobago. This historic achievement marks the first time the Proteas have reached the final of a senior ICC World Cup tournament.
Rendani Ramovha, CEO of SuperSport, expressed delight in the agreement, highlighting the importance of broadcasting key national sporting events. The cricket final against India will be followed by two home tests in July, where the double defending Rugby World Cup champions, the Springboks, will face off against Ireland.
SABC’s Group CEO, Nomsa Chabeli, emphasized the national broadcaster’s role in inspiring patriotism and unity among citizens. The agreement is part of the SABC’s efforts to ensure the public can engage in significant national moments. The broadcast will commence at 15:30 on SABC 2, with radio stations providing live updates.
SuperSport will air the cricket final on SS Grandstand, SuperSport Cricket, and SuperSport Variety channels. Viewers can look forward to a special one-hour build-up before the start of the match, enhancing the excitement surrounding the Proteas’ quest for their first T20 World Cup crown.
Through this agreement, sports fans across the country will have the opportunity to rally behind both the Proteas and the Springboks as they compete for glory on the international stage.
