Honduran Football: Transfers and Upcoming Matches Heat Up

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras — Exciting changes are underway in Honduran football as teams prepare for the upcoming season and title matches. Rafael Villeda, president of Olimpia, expressed confidence ahead of their Clausura finale against Real España this Sunday. The match is set for 5 p.m. at the National Stadium Chelato Uclés.
“We hope Sunday is a festive sports event. The atmosphere in San Pedro Sula was beautiful, with peace between fans. May the best team win,” Villeda said during the Minuto 90 program on Radio Cadena Voces.
Villeda emphasized that both teams qualified with the same number of points, making the series evenly matched. He urged fans to come out and support their team.
Olimpia is also looking ahead to the Copa Centroamericana starting in July. Villeda noted the team aims to improve on last season’s group stage exit: “We need to do better this time. Our priority is to advance past the first round,” he stated.
Meanwhile, Motagua is making headlines with recent signings after their semifinal loss in the Clausura tournament to Real España. They have officially signed goalkeeper Luis Ortiz from Marathón and defender Luis Santamaría from Juticalpa FC. Ortiz recently received his first call-up to the national team.
“Luis Ortiz joins us to defend the blue goal with determination and commitment,” Motagua announced in a statement. Ortiz previously excelled with Marathón, taking advantage of an opportunity as a starter.
Additionally, news emerged about Policía Nacional FC’s potential fusion with Génesis FC. On May 23, they confirmed the signing of two new players: Honduran Kevin Álvarez and Colombian Rafael Agamez, adding to their roster ahead of next season.
While the details of the merger remain unclear, speculations indicate that Luis Alvarado will take over coaching responsibilities. Both teams have yet to confirm their future arrangements.
As competition heats up, the second half of 2025 promises to be crucial for Honduran football, with qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup on the horizon. Villeda highlighted the importance of upcoming matches against the Cayman Islands and Antigua to secure a place in the next round.
