Hornell Red Raiders Dominate Lyons in State Qualifier

WAYLAND, N.Y. — The Hornell Red Raiders showcased their dominance Tuesday night with a 76-44 victory over the Lyons in the Section V Class B state qualifier, solidifying their path towards a potential state final four appearance.
The early game dynamic was a fast-paced display reminiscent of a basketball drill, characterized by quick passing and aggressive drives to the basket. Selena Maldonado was pivotal in energizing her team, using her unmatched speed to create numerous scoring opportunities.
“Selena is an incredible talent, and tonight she executed our game plan perfectly,” said Hornell coach Jim Dagon. “Her ability to control the game’s tempo allowed us to run plays effectively and find quality shots.”
Hornell’s success hinged on strong performances from Jordyn Dyring and Payton Bentley, who combined for 48 points. Dyring, who scored 26 points, was electric from beyond the arc, hitting seven 3-pointers. Bentley added 22 points while also contributing 13 rebounds, three blocks, and three assists.
“The girls did a great job of executing the game plan tonight, defending and rebounding with tenacity,” Dagon said. “Dyring and Bentley were monsters for us tonight, finishing with 26 and 22, respectively. They stayed in attack mode without forcing things.”
As a team, Hornell collected 38 rebounds and had a robust shooting night, hitting 15-of-34 from 3-point range. Mia Nasca contributed significantly with 11 points and three 3-pointers, while providing crucial defensive support.
Despite being outmatched, the Lyons attempted to fight back with contributions from Sa’Niyah Bell, who scored 13 points. Her performance, alongside Jayla Bell’s 11 and Carmella Parker’s 10, was not enough to swing momentum in their favor.
“We made sure that their small runs never allowed them to get back into the game,” Dagon noted. “Mia Nasca’s early scoring helped us take control right from the start.”
Dagon praised the defensive efforts of his players, particularly noting how Nasca and Alexis Smith effectively contained Jayla Bell, making it difficult for her to find her rhythm.
With this decisive win, Hornell improves to 20-3 and awaits the winner of the Section VI Class B championship game between Salamanca and Newfane, setting the stage for a highly anticipated next matchup in the Far West Regionals.
“The girls know what needs to be done to succeed, and their execution tonight was commendable,” Dagon said, reflecting on his team’s performance. “I’m very proud of them.”
