Houston Astros Extend José Altuve's Contract With $125 Million Deal

The Houston Astros have announced a contract extension for their second baseman and leadoff man, José Altuve. Altuve, known as the shortest player in the major leagues, has signed a five-year deal worth $125 million that will keep him with the team through 2029. The contract begins after the current season and includes a $15 million signing bonus.

Altuve, a Venezuelan player, has spent his entire career with the Astros. He has been a standout performer, leading the American League in hits four times and stolen bases twice. Altuve has also won multiple awards, including six Silver Sluggers and two World Series rings with the Astros.

Last year, Altuve faced some setbacks due to injuries but managed to hit an impressive .335 in the second half of the season, helping the Astros reach the American League Championship Series. Despite the controversy surrounding the team’s electronic sign-stealing scheme during the 2017 World Series, Altuve remains a beloved figure among Houston fans.

The Astros’ new general manager, Dana Brown, made it clear that he wanted Altuve to stay with the team. Altuve expressed a similar sentiment, stating that he hoped to retire as an Astro. This contract extension will take Altuve through his age-39 season, and if he fulfills the deal, he will have spent 19 seasons with the Astros.

Altuve’s signing comes at a time when the Astros are also looking to retain other key players, such as third baseman Alex Bregman. The team has already seen some changes, with manager Dusty Baker retiring and players like Martin Maldonado and Michael Brantley moving on. However, the Astros hope that Altuve’s continued presence, along with the addition of lefty closer Josh Hader, will help them reclaim their dominance in the division and compete against rivals like the Texas Rangers.
