Houston Dynamo Héctor Herrera

The Houston Dynamo FC has announced several key roster decisions following the 2024 season, including the decline of the 2025 contract option for midfielder Héctor Herrera. Herrera, who joined the Dynamo in the summer of 2022 after his stint with Spanish club Atletico Madrid, will not be returning to the team for the upcoming season.

General Manager Pat Onstad expressed his gratitude to Herrera and other departing players for their contributions to the club. “I sincerely thank them for their contributions to the club and wish them well in the next step of their careers,” Onstad said. Despite the changes, the Dynamo are optimistic about their future, having qualified for consecutive postseason appearances for the first time in over a decade and setting new club records for points earned in a season and road wins.

In addition to Herrera, the Dynamo declined contract options for five other players: Ján Greguš, Júnior Moreno, Brad Smith, Ousmane Sylla, and Xavier Valdez. Forward McKinze Gaines is also out of contract and is now a free agent. The team has exercised 2025 contract options for four players: Franco Escobar, Sebastian Kowalczyk, Micael, and Gabe Segal.

Houston is currently in negotiations with five players regarding their return for the 2025 campaign: Latif Blessing, Steve Clark, Daniel Steres, Tate Schmitt, and Andrew Tarbell. The Dynamo enter the 2025 season with 17 players already under contract, maintaining a strong core as they prepare for the upcoming transfer windows.
