Houston Rockets Kick Off 2024-25 Season with High Expectations and Key Contract Extensions
The Houston Rockets are set to begin their 2024-25 NBA season with a home game against the Charlotte Hornets on Wednesday, October 23, at the Toyota Center. This season marks the second year of the team’s “Phase 2” in the post-James Harden era, and there are high expectations for a significant improvement after a 41-win campaign in the previous season.
One of the key developments heading into the new season is the contract extensions for two of the team’s young stars, Alperen Åžengün and Jalen Green. Green, who made history as the highest-drafted player to come out of the G League in 2021, has signed a new contract that is viewed by NBA insiders as potentially making him easier to trade if the Rockets decide to move on from him. However, it is emphasized that a trade is not guaranteed.
The Rockets are also looking forward to the contributions of their new rookie, Reed Sheppard, who is highly touted for his versatile skills. Sheppard, a 20-year-old guard from Kentucky, has impressed with his three-point shooting, as well as his defensive capabilities, and is predicted by some to win the Rookie of the Year award.
Head coach Ime Udoka and the front office, led by general manager Rafael Stone, are focused on a patient approach to building the team, unlike the more aggressive star-hunting strategy of the past. The team aims to avoid the play-in tournament and secure a playoff spot, with predictions suggesting they could earn the No. 6 seed in the Western Conference.
In addition to the on-court expectations, the Rockets have also made other roster moves, such as signing Samuels to an Exhibit 10 contract, which could see him compete for a two-way position on the team.
