GENEVA, Switzerland – Hubert Hurkacz defeated Taylor Fritz, the world’s fourth-ranked player, in the quarterfinals of the ATP 250 tournament on May 22, 2025. Hurkacz won 6-3, 7-6(7-5), showcasing stellar tennis performance without dropping his serve throughout the match.
The American, seeded first in the tournament, was considered a favorite not only for this match but for the entire tournament as well. Hurkacz’s win sets him up for a semifinal against a lower-ranked opponent.
Hurkacz entered the court with high spirits after an impressive run in the tournament. He easily defeated Arthur Cazaux 6-3, 6-4 in the first round and followed that with a dominant performance against Arthur Rinderknech, winning 6-4, 6-1. The quarterfinal against Fritz was expected to be a real test for the 28-year-old.
From the start, the match posed challenges for Hurkacz. He had to defend break points in both the first and third games. Maintaining composure, Hurkacz managed to break Fritz’s serve in the fourth game, securing a crucial lead of 3-1. Both players served impressively afterwards, but Hurkacz’s early lead secured his first set victory in just 34 minutes.
The second set began with potential for Hurkacz, but Fritz defended against break points to stay competitive. As the set unfolded, tension rose, culminating in a tiebreak where Hurkacz seized his opportunity at match point, allowing him to close out the match.
As Hurkacz prepares for his semifinal match, he is favored against Sebastian Ofner, who is currently ranked 128th in the ATP standings. Ofner reached the semifinals by defeating Karen Khachanov in a surprising upset, winning 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. Meanwhile, Hurkacz may face the tournament’s second seed, Novak Djokovic, in the final if he advances.
