HUMBLE, Texas — Sam Cosmi, the Washington Commanders‘ standout offensive lineman, has become one of the NFL‘s most formidable guards, thanks to a relentless work ethic and a family legacy of resilience. Born to Romanian immigrants who fled communism in the 1980s, Cosmi’s journey from a small-town Texas high school to NFL stardom is a testament to grit and determination.

Cosmi, 25, stands at 6 feet 6 inches and weighs 309 pounds, but his size is only part of what makes him a force on the field. “Watching my dad leave at 6 a.m. and come back at 8 p.m. taught me that nothing comes easy,” Cosmi said, reflecting on his father, Cornel, a Mercedes-Benz mechanic who commuted four hours daily to provide for the family. His mother, Rodica, instilled in him the values of humility and perseverance. “She taught me to stay humble, no matter how much success I had,” Cosmi added.

Growing up in Humble, Texas, Cosmi was far from a standout athlete in his early years. At Atascocita High School, he was initially overlooked by college recruiters. But a pivotal moment during his junior year changed everything. “He obliterated the defensive line in an Oklahoma drill,” recalled his high school coach, catching the attention of scouts. By his senior year, Cosmi was named first-team All-District and second-team All-State.

Cosmi’s college career at the University of Texas further showcased his versatility. He played in 34 of 35 games, even catching a touchdown pass against West Virginia—a rare feat for an offensive lineman. His performance earned him a spot in the 2021 NFL Draft, where the Washington Commanders selected him in the second round.
