Hurricanes Aim for 7-Game Point Streak Amid Aho’s Illness Uncertainty
RALEIGH, N.C. – The Carolina Hurricanes face uncertainty as star forward Sebastian Aho remains a game-time decision due to illness ahead of Thursday’s matchup against the Chicago Blackhawks. The Hurricanes, riding a six-game point streak, hope to extend their run despite potential lineup challenges.
Head coach Rod Brind'Amour confirmed Aho’s absence from morning skate, stating, “He didn’t feel well when he got to the rink.” If Aho cannot play, it would mark the second consecutive game the team misses a key forward due to illness, following Jack Roslovic‘s absence in Tuesday’s 4-0 win over the New York Rangers.
Roslovic, who returned to practice Thursday, skated in Aho’s usual spot between Mikko Rantanen and Jackson Blake during morning skate. The 27-year-old center has been a consistent offensive contributor this season, ranking second on the team with 18 goals among players who have been with the Hurricanes all season.
In net, Pyotr Kochetkov is expected to start, continuing his strong recent form. The 25-year-old goaltender has posted an 18-9-3 record with a 2.48 goals-against average and .903 save percentage this season. Kochetkov has been alternating starts with Frederik Andersen since the veteran’s return from knee surgery last week.
The Blackhawks, meanwhile, enter the game fresh off a 4-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning. Chicago’s young core, led by Connor Bedard, showed promise in the win, with Landon Slaggert scoring his first NHL goal and Arvid Söderblom stopping 34 of 35 shots for a .971 save percentage.
Taylor Hall, recently traded from Chicago to Carolina, reflected on his time with the Blackhawks, noting the organization’s focus on developing young talent. “They’re on a different timeline than my career is right now, so I get it,” Hall told reporters.
Statistically, the Hurricanes hold advantages in several key categories, ranking fifth in goals per game (3.35) and first in penalty kill percentage (86%). The Blackhawks, sitting 31st in the NHL standings, have struggled offensively, ranking 31st in goals per game (2.62) and 30th in faceoff win percentage (45%).
Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET at PNC Arena in Raleigh. The game will be broadcast on Bally Sports South and ESPN+.
