Ian Anderson Atlanta Braves Pitching Spring Training

NORTH PORT, Fla. – Atlanta Braves pitcher Ian Anderson faced a challenging spring training debut on Sunday, walking three batters and allowing one run over 1 2/3 innings against the Tampa Bay Rays. However, Anderson is not just preparing for the season; he is competing for one of two coveted spots in the Braves’ rotation.

After missing the past two MLB seasons due to Tommy John elbow surgery, Anderson’s return to the mound is significant. He emphasized the importance of results, stating, “I know the results are what’s going to get me on the team. So that definitely takes precedent.” Nevertheless, he remains optimistic about his progress, stating, “I think I do have the perspective to look back on what I’ve experienced so far, and just kind of take the positives out of it.”

Indeed, the most encouraging sign for Anderson is his health. His fastball velocity clocked in at 91-93 mph, and the right-hander expects improvements as the regular season approaches: “I usually kind of tack on 1 or 2 (mph) before we get out of (spring training),” he said.

Braves manager Brian Snitker acknowledged the importance of Anderson’s outing, stating, “I don’t care if it’s a spring training game, I think you’ve just got to get that one by him, and things will settle down a little bit. And he’ll get better from here.”

Teammates, including first baseman Matt Olson, expressed confidence in Anderson’s efforts. “I think Ian’s doing a great job,” Olson said. “He knows that he doesn’t have to go chase something crazy. Get back healthy. He looks good.”

Anderson’s track record also plays in his favor. In his two previous MLB seasons, he posted a 3.24 ERA and averaged more than one strikeout per inning. In eight postseason starts, he holds an impressive 1.25 ERA, showcasing his ability to perform under pressure.

However, past performance will not guarantee him a spot in the rotation. Snitker has indicated that the final roster decisions will be influenced mainly by spring training results. Alongside Anderson, Grant Holmes is a favored candidate for the last rotation spot, with Bryce Elder also in contention.

In Sunday’s game, Holmes pitched 2 innings, allowing a homer but performing well overall. Meanwhile, Elder has started competitively, pitching two scoreless innings in an earlier game against the Minnesota Twins.

The Braves’ outfield situation is also evolving as they await the return of Ronald Acuña Jr. from knee surgery. Recently signed player Bryan De La Cruz has made significant contributions, hitting a double in Sunday’s game, while fellow new addition Jarred Kelenic has shown promise with his own double in the previous game.

As the Braves navigate their spring training, the urgency and anticipation around Anderson’s comeback continue. It remains to be seen who will secure the final rotation spots, but Anderson’s health and performance will be critical factors in the Braves’ decisions. “At the end of the day, the guys that are going to make this team the best are going to be the guys who earn it,” Snitker stated.

Ian Anderson’s journey back from injury offers both challenges and opportunities as he resumes his pursuit of a consistent role within the Braves’ pitching staff.
