Ian Machado Garry Faces Carlos Prates in New UFC Kansas City Main Event

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Ian Machado Garry will headline the UFC Fight Night event on April 26 at the T-Mobile Center, facing off against rising star Carlos Prates in an exciting welterweight clash. The UFC announced the change Tuesday, replacing the initial main event between Jamahal Hill and Khalil Rountree, which has been scrapped for undisclosed reasons.
Garry (15-1 MMA, 8-1 UFC) looks to bounce back after suffering his first professional loss in December against unbeaten Shavkat Rakhmonov at UFC 310. Despite losing via decision, the Irishman delivered a strong performance that showcased his skills, making it a competitive bout.
“I learned a lot from that fight,” Garry said in a statement. “I’m motivated to prove I belong among the best in the welterweight division, and I’m ready to make a statement against Prates.”
Brazil’s Prates (21-6 MMA, 4-0 UFC) has emerged as a formidable contender, impressively finishing all his UFC fights in the first or second round. He secured four consecutive Performance of the Night bonuses in 2024, delivering knockouts against Trevin Giles, Charles Radtke, Li Jingliang, and Neil Magny.
“I’m excited for this opportunity,” Prates said. “Facing someone like Garry is a big test, and I believe I can come out on top.”
Originally, Prates was scheduled to face Geoff Neal at UFC 314 in Miami, but after Neal was injured, the UFC decided to shift him to the Kansas City event to meet Garry.
The updated fight card for UFC Kansas City features several compelling matchups, underscoring the organization’s commitment to delivering an action-packed night for fans. Alongside Garry vs. Prates, the event will include notable fighters in various weight classes. The main card remains under construction as more fights are confirmed.
