Iconic Lutsen Resort Lodge Destroyed In Devastating Fire

The historic Lutsen Resort main lodge in northern Minnesota has been ravaged by a massive fire, causing the complete destruction of the beloved landmark. The fire broke out in the early morning hours, prompting a swift response from the Cook County Sheriff’s Office and local fire departments.

Staff members at Lutsen Resort noticed smoke coming from the floor in the lobby area and immediately sounded the fire alarm at around 12:24 a.m. By the time firefighters arrived on the scene, the building was fully engulfed in flames.

Luckily, no guests were present at the time of the fire, and there were no reported injuries. The cause of the fire remains unknown and will be investigated by the State Fire Marshall. Fire Chief Steve Duclos commented on the rapid spread of the fire, emphasizing the old age and inherent fire risks of the historic lodge.

This unfortunate incident marks the third time that the Lutsen Resort lodge has fallen victim to fires, with previous incidents occurring in 1949 and 1951. The lodge, which has been cherished for its long and rich history, had recently been undergoing renovations and expansions under the stewardship of Bryce Campbell since 2018.

The devastating loss of the iconic lodge deeply impacted the local community, with Visit Cook County Executive Director Linda Jurek expressing sympathy and support for Bryce Campbell and his team. Jurek highlighted the immense effort invested in the lodge and its recent rebranding.

The fire drew a significant response from neighboring fire departments, including Lutsen Fire Department, Tofte Fire Department, Tofte First Responders, Grand Marais Fire Department, Maple Hill Fire Department, Gunflint Fire Department, Finland Fire Department, Silver Bay Fire Department, Grand Portage Fire Department, and the Cook County Sheriff’s Office.

As firefighters battled the blaze into the early morning hours, the local community rallied together to show their solidarity. Cascade Lodge stepped in to provide meals and coffee to the exhausted firefighting crews, while the EMS Director offered gratitude to all involved fire departments for their relentless efforts.

While the future of Lutsen Resort remains uncertain, the memories and significance of the lodge will forever remain in the hearts of all those who have visited throughout the years. Plans for rebuilding and restoring the lodge will undoubtedly be met with support and anticipation from the local community and beyond.
