Illinois Forward Morez Johnson Jr. Enters Transfer Portal After Freshman Season

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Freshman forward Morez Johnson Jr. has entered the transfer portal after one season with the Illinois basketball team, according to multiple reports. This decision follows the program’s loss to Kentucky in the NCAA Tournament’s Round of 32, marking a significant departure for the Illini.
Johnson’s announcement comes less than 24 hours after another Illini player, Carey Booth, also declared for the portal. However, Johnson’s exit is seen as a more substantial setback for the team, as he played a critical role during his freshman season.
In the 2024-25 season, Johnson started in eight out of the 30 games he played, averaging seven points, 6.7 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks per game in just 17.6 minutes. He moved into a starting role late in the season but suffered a broken wrist during a game against Michigan State in February, which limited his participation in the postseason.
After returning from injury, Johnson contributed off the bench during the Big Ten and NCAA tournaments. His performance during the season hinted at his potential, with three double-doubles and a shooting percentage over 64% from the field.
Head coach Brad Underwood had high expectations for Johnson, who committed to Illinois in 2021 while playing at St. Rita High School. His successful high school career included being named News-Gazette All-State Player of the Year and Illinois Mr. Basketball, further heightening the impact of his early departure.
“In most years, Morez as a freshman in the Big Ten would have been in the conversation for all-conference honors, if he had stayed healthy,” Underwood said. “He’s been a consistent rebounder and an elite defender.”
Underwood acknowledged the challenges ahead as Illinois navigates the transfer portal. “It’s speed dating at its finest,” he said. “We’re trying to find the right pieces to fill the void.”
Johnson’s departure creates a notable gap in Illinois’ frontcourt, which the team needs to address promptly. Underwood mentioned that he has already been evaluating potential transfer candidates while preparing for the NCAA Tournament. “We’re gathering information and have a pretty good idea of what we need to do next,” he added.
As the transfer portal remains open, Illinois is looking to build upon its roster for the 2025-26 season despite the recent setbacks. With several players potentially considering their futures, the program aims to maintain its competitive edge as it moves forward.
