Illinois Freshman Kasparas Jakucionis Declares for 2025 NBA Draft

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Freshman basketball player Kasparas Jakucionis, a standout for the Illinois Fighting Illini, has announced his intention to enter the 2025 NBA Draft. The 6-foot-6 guard, who is projected as a top-10 pick, revealed his decision on Monday during an interview with ESPN.
“This has been my dream from a young age,” Jakucionis said. “I’ve waited for this moment a long time. Saying goodbye to Illinois will be the hardest part. I’ve made friendships and built real relationships with players, coaches, support staff, and everyone around Champaign. My goal now is to work as hard as I can and be the best version of myself.”
Jakucionis, who hails from Vilnius, Lithuania, had an impressive debut season with Illinois, averaging 15.0 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 4.7 assists per game. His performance earned him a spot on the Big Ten All-Freshman Team and the All-Big Ten Second Team. The Fighting Illini made it to the NCAA tournament’s round of 32 before falling to a higher-seeded opponent.
Reflecting on his time at Illinois, Jakucionis noted the steep learning curve he faced as a young player on a team with limited NCAA tournament experience. “It went by so fast,” he said. “There were a lot of ups and downs with a young team. Coach [Brad] Underwood and my teammates trusted me. We built a great relationship, chemistry, and bond. The connections I made will stay with me for a long time.”
Before his college career, Jakucionis made his mark at Euroleague powerhouse Barcelona, becoming one of the youngest players to compete at that level by debuting at just 16 years old. He also showcased his skills on the international stage, representing Lithuania in multiple FIBA tournaments.
“I wanted to be closer to American basketball,” Jakucionis explained. “The academic side is very important for me and my family. And of course, for the NBA, it helps. The competition in college is extremely high level. Every game and detail matters. You’re competing against the best young players in the world.”
Jakucionis has drawn comparisons to NBA stars for his playing style, particularly studying Luka Dončić’s approach to the game. He cited learning opportunities from veterans in both the NBA and European leagues, saying, “The IQ level in the Euroleague is incredible.”
Head coach Brad Underwood praised Jakucionis’s growth over the season and expressed confidence in his readiness for the next level. “Kasparas had a fantastic year, and I am so impressed with how well he handled all that was thrown at him,” Underwood said in a statement. “His love for the game, intelligence, and work ethic will continue to serve him well in the NBA.”
In addition to Jakucionis, fellow freshman Will Riley has also declared for the 2025 NBA Draft, marking a significant moment for the Fighting Illini’s program. Riley averaged 12.6 points and was named the Big Ten Sixth Man of the Year.
The NBA Draft combine is set to take place from May 11 to May 18 in Chicago, with the draft scheduled for June 25 to 26 in New York.
