Illinois Lands Montenegrin Forward David Mirkovic Amid Roster Overhaul

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — The University of Illinois has secured a commitment from 19-year-old Montenegrin forward David Mirkovic, announced on Monday evening by ESPN’s Jonathan Givony. The addition fortifies the Illini’s roster as they prepare for the 2025-26 college basketball season.
Mirkovic, standing at 6 feet 9 inches and weighing 250 pounds, has played professionally at SC Derby in Montenegro for the past two seasons. He is averaging 8.8 points and 6.7 rebounds in the ABA League while participating in the Nike Hoop Summit in Portland this week as a member of the World Team.
“We are excited to add David to our program,” said Illinois coach Brad Underwood. “He brings a physical presence and a unique skill set that will complement our existing players, especially the Ivisic twins.”
The Illini’s roster building strategy has shifted towards international talent, with Mirkovic’s commitment marking the second addition from SC Derby, following Zvonimir Ivisic, who recently transitioned from Kentucky to Illinois.
In 24 games this season, Mirkovic shot 38 percent overall and displayed effective scoring abilities in both the Adriatic League and Montenegro’s domestic competitions. His performance peaked during the Adidas Next Generation U18 Tournament in 2024 where he averaged 22.3 points and 13 rebounds per game.
Mirkovic has also represented Montenegro on the international stage, participating in various youth championships and making an appearance for the senior national team during the FIBA EuroBasket qualifiers earlier this year.
While Mirkovic is honing his skills at the Nike Hoop Summit, coach Underwood is actively preparing for significant roster changes. The Illini have had to navigate the loss of key players while also looking to maintain competitive depth.
<p“David is one of the top international prospects in this year’s class,” Givony said. “His versatility and unique experience make him an exciting acquisition for Illinois.”
As the transfer portal opens, all eyes will remain on the evolving landscape of the Illini roster with hopes that Mirkovic will seamlessly integrate into the team’s future plans.
