Navi Mumbai, India – Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the tributes to India’s women cricketers following their historic victory in the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup final on November 2, 2025. The Indian team, captained by Harmanpreet Kaur, defeated South Africa by 52 runs at the DY Patil Stadium.

This triumph marks India’s first title after losing in the finals of 2005 and 2017. With approximately 40,000 fans in attendance, the victory became a celebrated moment in Indian sports history.

Earlier in the tournament, India’s campaign looked bleak after suffering three consecutive defeats. However, they rebounded dramatically, reaching the semifinals where they staged a record chase against seven-time champions Australia. Prime Minister Modi commended the team on social media, stating, “The team showed exceptional teamwork and tenacity throughout the tournament. Congratulations to our players. This historic win will motivate future champions to take up sports.”

In celebration of their victory, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced a reward of 510 million Indian rupees (approximately $5.8 million). The Indian Express dubbed the win as “Herstoric” on its front page, emphasizing its significance.

Captain Harmanpreet Kaur expressed her hopes that this win would be a turning point for women’s cricket in the country. “Without that [winning a big tournament], we couldn’t talk about change. At the end of the day, fans want to see their favorite team win,” she said.

Cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar called the win a defining moment in Indian women’s cricket. He remarked, “Today, our women’s cricket team has done something truly special. They have inspired countless young girls across the country to pick up a bat and believe that they too can lift that trophy one day.”

Mithali Raj, a former captain of the women’s team who led India to the 2017 final, shared her joy over the victory. “Tonight, that dream finally came true,” she wrote on social media.

The win is expected to spark further interest in women’s cricket and inspire a new generation of female athletes. The Indian women’s team’s performance not only showcases their skill but also paves the way for greater recognition and equality in cricket.

This historic victory positions Indian women’s cricket on a global map, setting the stage for an exciting future in the sport.
