Indiana Pacers New York Knicks Game 1 Overtime

NEW YORK — In a thrilling Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals, the Indiana Pacers staged a remarkable comeback to defeat the New York Knicks 138-135 in overtime on May 21, 2025. The Pacers were down by 14 points with just over three minutes left in regulation, but they rallied to tie the game thanks to a last-second buzzer-beater by Tyrese Haliburton.

After trailing for most of the game, Indiana found a spark when Aaron Nesmith drained six three-pointers, helping the Pacers score 31 points on their final 13 possessions of the fourth quarter. The Knicks, who previously had the game seemingly controlled, missed crucial free throws that could have extended their lead.

Haliburton’s buzzer-beater was a shot that epitomized the drama of playoff basketball. It bounced off the rim before sinking through the net, tying the game and sending it into overtime. Haliburton finished the game with 33 points, while Nesmith scored 30, tying his playoff career high.

“Each shot that he made just kept giving us more confidence that we could win this game,” Haliburton said of Nesmith’s impressive closing performance.

Even in overtime, the Pacers demonstrated remarkable resilience. Andrew Nembhard’s crucial layup in the final seconds gave Indiana the lead, sealing the victory. The Pacers improved to 7-0 in clutch playoff games this season with the win.

The Knicks had a strong start to the game, with Jalen Brunson scoring 43 points and Karl-Anthony Towns providing key defensive plays. However, the team faltered in the final moments of regulation, allowing the Pacers to take advantage and rally back.

“This type of loss can potentially swing a series,” noted Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau, emphasizing the missed opportunities. “We can’t let our guard down against them.”

The series continues with Game 2 on May 23, 2025, where both teams will seek to adjust and capitalize on the lessons learned from this historic clash at Madison Square Garden.
