Sixers Basketball Season Injuries

PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Philadelphia 76ers are set to close out a tumultuous NBA season on Sunday against the Chicago Bulls, holding the league’s fifth-worst record at 24-57. This disappointing finish highlights a year plagued by injuries to their All-Star trio consisting of Joel Embiid, George, and Caleb Martin.

The franchise’s disheartening campaign began with high hopes after acquiring Martin to complement Embiid and George in pursuit of a championship. However, those aspirations quickly faded as the team struggled with a lack of cohesion due to frequent injuries, marking one of the most disappointing seasons in the franchise’s 76-year history.

“A nightmare,” is how head coach Nick Nurse summarized the season’s struggles. The team enters their season finale with nothing but hopes for recovery and redemption, as they failed to attain the high expectations set at the season’s dawn.

The troubles for the Sixers began early in training camp when Embiid announced he would take it easy due to concerns over his left knee. His decision resulted in missing the entire preseason and the first nine games of the regular season, compounded by a suspension. Compounding the woes, George sustained a hyperextension of his left knee during a preseason game against the Atlanta Hawks and missed crucial early games. By November 21, the team stood at a mere 2-12, the NBA’s worst record.

As the Sixers tried to hold onto their championship dreams, George missed multiple weeks with recurring injuries, including another absence due to an adductor muscle issue. Martin’s health was also problematic; he struggled with injuries and was eventually traded to the Dallas Mavericks for Quentin Grimes.

Despite the team’s injury challenges, they managed a brief resurgence, clinching a stretch of 10 victories in 13 games from late November to December. “Those stretches gave us false hope,” Nurse recalled. “But the injury bug just kept biting us.”

In a season marked with disappointments, the injuries began to pile up. Rookie player had to shut down on January 9 after undergoing surgery for a torn meniscus, while veteran Eric Gordon faced his own injury issues, sidelined by a sprained finger.

The inability of the Sixers to play a full roster together cost them dearly, as injuries limited Embiid to just 19 games this year. George managed to appear in 41 contests, but his injury troubles persisted. As of late March, the Sixers had been without at least eight regular rotation players.

Looking ahead, Nurse remains cautiously optimistic for next season, counting on the potential for a healthy core involving Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and George. “When those two guys are on the floor, we have proven we can win games,” Nurse stated. “What lies ahead depends greatly on our health.”

If Embiid’s knee issues continue, the franchise may face challenging decisions in the offseason, as their current trajectory indicates a need for change to avoid repeating a damaging season.
