Injuries Challenge Texas Rivals Mavericks and Spurs in Key Matchup

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — Facing a slew of injuries, the Dallas Mavericks and San Antonio Spurs prepare for a crucial matchup at the Frost Bank Center on March 12. Both teams, recently struggling to find their footing, will aim to navigate their existing challenges to gain momentum in the remaining games of the season.
The Mavericks, currently on a five-game losing streak, recently traded franchise star Luka Dončić for Anthony Davis, who has been sidelined with an injury. In addition, key players Kyrie Irving and several others are also out, leaving the team with limited depth. The Spurs are missing their own linchpin, Victor Wembanyama, further complicating their competitive prospects.
As these battered teams meet for the third time this season, the Spurs have lost both prior encounters against Dallas. However, with injuries redefining both rosters, historical data offers little insight into the likely outcome.
“This game is less about past performances and more about who can adapt to their injuries and make the most of their lineup,” said Spurs coach Gregg Popovich. “We need to find ways to stay competitive, no matter who is available.”
In this latest bout, the Spurs are looking to bounce back from a disappointing 141-124 loss against the Minnesota Timberwolves, where they struggled defensively, allowing an alarming 21 three-pointers. Moving forward, the focus for San Antonio will be tightening up on defense while capitalizing on bench depth, as players like Stephon Castle and Keldon Johnson step into more prominent roles.
Castle has excelled recently, scoring over 20 points in five of his last six games. Coach Popovich believes the emerging talent can provide a battery charge for the squad, saying, “Stephon is showing he can be a game-changer. We’ll need him to keep that up.”
The Mavericks, despite their roster challenges, still boast sharpshooters like Klay Thompson, who remains a key factor for Dallas. In their last outing, Thompson logged 26 points, but the team fell short against the Phoenix Suns.
“We need to play smarter and rely on our shooters more efficiently,” said Mavericks coach Jason Kidd. “The guys on the bench are going to have to step it up if we want any chance at victory tomorrow.”
Dallas currently has several key players listed as out, including Anthony Davis (thigh), Daniel Gafford (knee), and Kyrie Irving (knee). Meanwhile, the Spurs’ injury report is similarly grim with Victor Wembanyama (shoulder) and Charles Bassey (knee) unavailable.
San Antonio, standing at a 21-42 record, has struggled throughout the season but looks to leverage its home-court advantage as they prepare for another clash with Dallas, known for its fierce rivalry. With both teams in dire need of a win, significant storylines will unfold as they approach tip-off.
The game is set to begin at 8:30 PM ET, promising an exciting contest as each team seeks to manage their injuries effectively and strive for a much-needed victory.
