Injury-Plagued Dodgers Rely on Unproven Pitching Trio in NLCS

Dodgers Pitching Bullpen 2024

LOS ANGELES — In a tumultuous season characterized by a series of injuries, the Los Angeles Dodgers find themselves relying heavily on a group of unproven pitchers in the bullpen as they vie for victory in the National League Championship Series (NLCS). This strategy became apparent as the Dodgers experienced notable success, securing 33 consecutive scoreless innings between the end of the NL Division Series (NLDS) and the beginning of the NLCS.

The Dodgers’ manager, Dave Roberts, has had to rely on a series of backup pitching plans throughout the season due to the myriad of injuries affecting the team’s primary pitchers. Ahead of Game 1 of the NLCS, an unexpected trio of pitchers found themselves thrust into the spotlight as they attempted to fill the void left by injured major leaguers.

In Game 1, Roberts employed the talents of young pitchers, with Casparius shining, delivering a series of impressive pitches that bewildered opponents. However, in Game 2, the challenges of this approach became evident. The New York Mets capitalized early, scoring six runs in the first two innings, highlighting the risks of relying on less-experienced arms.

The Dodgers’ challenges are further compounded by the absence of seven starting pitchers, including some key figures who have been absent for the season due to injuries. This list includes established names such as Tony Gonsolin, Clayton Kershaw, and Julio Urias, among others.

“We’ve tapped into depth,” Roberts said, recognizing the unexpected but necessary reliance on younger players. “You look at the roster right now, and certainly on the pitching side, there’s three or four guys that I didn’t know if they were going to get major league service this year. They’re now on a postseason roster.”

Among the new faces stepping up are Casparius, Henriquez, and Knack. While Casparius has shown moments of brilliance with his hard sweeper pitch, Henriquez brings power to the mound with his 100-mph fastballs, and Knack possesses a methodical, four-pitch arsenal. Despite their talents, each has faced challenges in adapting to postseason pressures.

These up-and-coming talents were initially viewed as emergency options but now play pivotal roles as the series progresses. As the Dodgers navigate a playoff run with just two traditional starters expected to pitch deep into games, Roberts will have to strategically maneuver his bullpen to optimize their chances of success.

“For me, personally, it’s been my most challenging season,” Roberts confessed prior to Game 1. “With the injuries and introducing a lot of young players in critical roles, you just have to trust and run guys out there in spots that you don’t normally feel good about and keep this whole machine moving forward in a good, positive direction.”
