DALLAS (AP) — The Dallas Mavericks and Miami Heat will meet Thursday night at American Airlines Center in a crucial matchup for both teams, but both will compete under challenging circumstances due to significant player injuries. This game marks the final contest before the league’s All-Star break, and both teams will be playing on the second night of a back-to-back.
The Mavericks have ruled out six players, including recent acquisition Anthony Davis, while others, such as Kyrie Irving and Klay Thompson, are also sidelined for the encounter. As of Thursday’s tip-off, Dallas has eight players unavailable, significantly hampering their depth.
Dante Exum, who missed Wednesday’s game against the Golden State Warriors, will return. However, Irving, who is dealing with right shoulder soreness, and Thompson, with a left foot sprain, will not participate. Their absence leaves the Mavericks team to rely on a core group of players, including Exum, Jaden Hardy, Spencer Dinwiddie, and Kessler Edwards.
Irving shone brightly in Wednesday’s game against the Warriors, scoring 42 points in 40 minutes, solidifying his status as a key player ahead of Sunday’s All-Star Game. The added rest from missing Thursday’s matchup could be beneficial for his performance during the All-Star festivities.
“It’s good for Kyrie to rest up, knowing he had a heavy workload last night,” said Mavericks head coach. “He’s made a significant impact for us, and we want to ensure he stays fresh.”
The Heat will also face their share of challenges, missing key players including Bam Adebayo, who is dealing with a knee injury, and Andrew Wiggins, sidelined with an illness. Other absences include veterans Kevin Love and Terry Rozier. This string of injuries poses a challenge to Miami, which currently has a record of 25-27.
Dallas remains competitive despite the injuries, recently achieving a narrow 111-107 victory against the Warriors. In that game, the Mavericks overcame their height disadvantages, with Kessler Edwards and Olivier-Maxence Prosper as their tallest starters at 6-foot-8.
“We have to dig deep and execute our game plan,” said Dinwiddie, who is expected to take on a larger role in Irving’s absence. “Every game counts, especially as we head into the break.”
As both teams face significant roster challenges, the game tonight could hinge on bench performances. Dallas is a 1.5-point underdog, with the point total set at 217.5 according to DraftKings.
The Mavericks have shown resilience, with players like Max Christie stepping up, averaging 17 points in recent games. His performance will be crucial if Dallas hopes to secure a win against a similarly undermanned Miami squad.
