Instagram Influencer Faces Police Case For Yoga At Golden Temple

Police in Punjab have filed a case against social media influencer Archana Makwana following an incident at the Sri Harmandir Sahib, popularly known as the Golden Temple, in Amritsar. Makwana, who is known for her lifestyle content, is facing charges under Section 295A of the Indian Penal Code. This action comes after the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) raised concerns about her activities within the revered Sikh shrine.

The controversy unfolded on June 21, which coincided with the International Day of Yoga. Makwana posted images and videos of herself practicing yoga at the Golden Temple, sparking outrage among Sikh community members. The SGPC, responsible for the management of gurdwaras in India, promptly filed a formal complaint with the Punjab Police, alleging that Makwana’s actions had offended religious sentiments.

SGPC President Harjinder Singh Dhami expressed disappointment over Makwana’s behavior, stating that she left the premises without partaking in the customary prayers. An investigation revealed that Makwana spent nearly an hour at the Golden Temple solely engaged in yoga activities, neglecting the spiritual significance of the site.

Following the backlash, Makwana took down the contentious content from her social media platforms and issued a public apology. In her statement, she acknowledged the unintentional nature of her actions and expressed remorse for any distress caused. Despite her apology, Makwana claimed to have received threatening phone calls, highlighting the severity of the situation.

The case has drawn attention to the need for greater awareness and sensitivity when engaging in activities at religious sites. The SGPC, often referred to as the ‘Mini Parliament‘ of Sikhism, continues to uphold the sanctity of the Golden Temple and other gurdwaras under its jurisdiction. The incident has reignited discussions on the boundaries of acceptable behavior within places of worship and the responsibilities of individuals, especially those with large online followings.
