Investigation Launched into Water Quality Concerns at Mullaloo Beach
WA’s Department of Health has issued a warning concerning potential water quality issues at Mullaloo Beach following reports of skin irritation, ear infections, and gastrointestinal illness, potentially linked to algal blooms between Pinnaroo Point and Ocean Reef Marina.
Local resident Kim Allen has raised concerns about the nearby pipes releasing treated wastewater into the ocean near Mullaloo Beach, prompting meetings with stakeholders including Hillarys MLA Caitlin Collins and officials from the DWER and Water Corporation.
The Department of Water and Environmental Regulation (DWER) has confirmed that there are no harmful phytoplankton species present in recent water tests at Mullaloo and Ocean Reef beaches. They also plan to engage an independent consultant to further assess the marine environment.
Despite ongoing concerns, progress on the $223 million Ocean Reef Marina development is continuing, with efforts to address issues like sediment run-off and dust pollution to alleviate community worries and ensure completion of the marina project.
Local community group Mullaloo Collective has been actively monitoring the situation, providing drone footage and observations to authorities, highlighting the importance of community engagement in addressing environmental concerns.
