IOWA CITY, Iowa — Forward Patrick Freeman has entered the NCAA Transfer Portal after two seasons with the Iowa Hawkeyes, according to sources including On3’s Pete Nakos and Joe Tipton. Freeman’s decision follows the firing of head coach Fran McCaffery, which initiates a 30-day window for Iowa players to consider transferring.

The sophomore forward stands 6 feet 10 inches tall and averaged 16.7 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 1.7 blocks in just over 26 minutes per game this past season. His performance established him as one of the premier big men in the Big Ten. However, Freeman concluded his season early due to a hand injury sustained at the end of January.

Freeman’s successful freshman year included being named Big Ten Rookie of the Year, where he averaged 10.6 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks per game, while leading the league in rebounds (203) and double-doubles (5). This year, despite his injury, he remained a key player for the Hawkeyes.

In a statement reflecting on the end of the season, Freeman expressed his frustrations after the team lost in the NIT. “When we lost in the NIT, I was angry, everyone was kinda angry. I really took it personal. I feel like I didn’t do enough,” Freeman said. “I really took this offseason to get my body right, get my mind right, and really lock in on those things.”

Freeman’s skills on the court extend beyond scoring; he has displayed the ability to hit mid-range jump shots and effectively pass out of double teams. His versatility makes him an attractive prospect for programs looking to upgrade their roster.

As a highly sought athlete, Freeman previously chose Iowa over offers from Michigan State, Indiana, and Marquette, among others when he signed in the class of 2023. He still has two years of eligibility remaining at his next destination.

Should Freeman’s departure initiate a wave of transfers, it would not be surprising given the coaching transition. Players have a 30-day period in which they can enter the Transfer Portal following the departure of McCaffery, who has been a significant figure in Iowa basketball.

The NCAA Transfer Portal officially opens on March 24 for college basketball players, creating an opportune time for Freeman and others to seek new pathways in their careers.
