Islam Makhachev Aims for Welterweight Glory at UFC 322
New York, NY — Islam Makhachev is ready to make his welterweight debut at UFC 322 on November 15, where he will challenge champion Jack Della Maddalena for the 170-pound title. After reigning as the UFC lightweight champion and successfully defending his title earlier this year, Makhachev has set his sights on becoming a two-division champion.
Starting the year at lightweight, Makhachev defended his title against Renato Moicano in January before deciding to move up in weight to pursue his new goal. In an interview with ESPN, he expressed confidence that the lighter weight cut will greatly benefit him. “No one who cuts, like, 10 kg. [approx. 22 pounds]… they never recover 100 percent,” Makhachev said. He explained that he typically feels only 60 to 70 percent recovered come fight night due to the rigorous cutting process.
Makhachev, who has an impressive professional record of 27 wins and 1 loss, revealed his excitement about experiencing the advantages of fighting at a higher weight class. “Let’s see after the second round if it happens,” he noted, emphasizing how crucial the later rounds will be in determining the fight’s outcome.
His corner will include UFC legend Khabib Nurmagomedov, who has mentored Makhachev throughout his career. Makhachev plans to employ Nurmagomedov’s game plan against Della Maddalena, focusing on grappling techniques to tire his opponent and potentially secure a victory on the ground. “I think I can finish him on the ground,” Makhachev added, indicating his belief in his superior grappling abilities.
With his transition to welterweight, Makhachev is poised to make an impactful statement in the octagon as he vies for championship glory.
